Great Smokeout Day

11/15/2018

Thursday, November 15th is a little-known holiday called the Great American Smokeout Day. The day is devoted to helping people stop smoking. Since quitting smoking is a personal process that is different for everyone, this day has one simple goal for all smokers: for this particular day, don’t smoke. This can be a one-day challenge for you or a starting point for quitting altogether.

While the dangers of smoking are well known, over 30 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. Smoking still causes over 450,000 deaths per year and over 16 million diseases. Besides the dangers to people who smoke, secondhand smoke can harm anyone who is around them. Studies show that living with a smoker can be as harmful as living in one of the world’s most polluted cities.

Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to elderly people and children. If you live with older or younger people or anyone with a compromised immune system, then you are harming them by smoking around them. Even if you only smoke outside, the particulates cling to clothing and hair and can be harmful once brought inside.

Quitting smoking is one way to make sure the air quality in your home is healthier for you and your loved ones. However, smoke lingers in the home long after an active smoker has quit. To ensure your home has better air quality faster, you will need to invest in quality ventilation and air filters.
